. joining us, robert reich and richard moore. robert reich, let me start with you because all of the tax revenue from the fiscal cliff deal adds up to about $600 billion over ten years. relative to our debt problem, that's not even a drop in the proverbial bucket. but here we are with the democrats after taxes went up on a whole list of things, they want as much as twice as much money in taxes. for real, they think they're going to get it? >> they're going to try to gets it. i don't know any republicans or democrats who want to raise taxes for the sake of more taxes. this is all in anticipation of a very, very large budget deficit in the out years. if we don't get more revenues, we're going to have to cut more into military spending, social security, infrastructure, all of the public investments we have in this country. the whole purpose of trying to get more tax revenue and hopefully trying to get more tax revenue from wealthiest americans rather than from middle class and poor americans is so government can do a lots of things americans want government to do. >> i want to ask you where

it with everybody? >> it's interesting. julianne moore talked about her stylist on the red carpet. now that we know celebrities have stylists, we don't necessarily think they're going to be huge successes and big misses. it's much more about the fact, you want to see the woman in a dress. you want to see her and think that she's beautiful. the risk-takers, what winds up happening is the dress is wearing them. not necessarily that it's a terrible dress. but that's the distinction now. >> who did you think were the winners last night? >> i had so many favorites. i have to go with jennifer lawrence. jesse chastain and naomi watts. i know amanda seyfried. and amanda looks gorgeous. that dress was amazing. >> you talk about when the dress wears the woman. who took a fashion risk? >> i think january jones is the woman we're talking about. she did severe hair. she went with the shorter hair and her hair falling out, that was part of it. but that dress really wore her a little bit. i love that dress, actually, when it was shown originally was shorter. i think it was a little less of a statement. >> i liked

of solar power, for example. something similar to moore's law applying to solar panels. >> it's not actually fully moore's law, there's also sort of the china law which is china overproduces to the point of bankruptcy. [laughter] which is sort of why the panels are so low. but it's close. >> but do you see technology as transforming our energy situation? >> it is. and i think although it's controversial, the fact of the matter is we should give credit to the people who invented these new forms of oil and natural gas drilling generally known as fracking, hydraulic fracking and so forth. those are american technological successes that have enabled us to sort of find more of this stuff. and, again, we can decide -- we can have a separate discussion as to how to regulate them and so forth which is very controversial. but the fact of the matter is that has materially changed the economic structure of energy in america. if you take a look at conservation and renewables which i think is, ultimately, the right answer, what you see now is the automation and instrumentation of passive s

about the tagging of moor lee? nearly two tons on a boat. what was that like? >> u.s. a very interesting thing. we've been successful in bringing world-class fishermen together with world class scientists. we came together in cape cod last september, and greg skomol was seeing a lot of great whites, and they were shutting down the beaches. we needed to put facts behind the fear, and we could manage them and people using the beaches safely. we were able to capture mary lee and use a special lift on the side of the research vessel to lift her off the research vessel and put a hose in her mouth and we execute a dozen research projects in about 15 minutes while the shark is out of water so we can get the latest technology, get blood samples to study about reproductive activity and physiological sfres a stress and things, and we lower her into the water and track her. she has ignited enthusiasm. we are turning the corner on the whole fear. people are embracing her in the southeast. putting together the pieces of the puzzle of her life. really thrilling to have created the tracker for science

it with your help and i thank you for appearing here today. thank you. >> news moore? >> thank you so much. i joined so many others in ottavio who have turned your pain into some actionable plans for the current killings and violence. i just don't know that i can do it, so i really appreciate your appearing to help us sort through these things. i think part of what makes all this so helpless is because how do you prepare in this sleepy little town like newton, connecticut, anticipating that someone will come in and shoot 26 people. you just don't necessarily prepare for that as you might think of some big-city, where that might have been. but there are -- i'm talking about domestic violence now. we know that every single day there's going to be some woman who is going to be killed because there are restraining orders that are put out there and they won in his spouse a firearm is five times by likely to be killed or that we have federal laws prohibiting misdemeanor or felony -- folks of felonies from having a firearm, but what do you think? what do you think, cheese is maybe a grant program re

to go to jail moore with the farm bureau now but i know you usda. then i want to go to frank lloyd. i'm going to frank because they know we went to brazil together and we went and met with some ranchers down in brazil including assistance farmers and really were looking there at how brazil has tried to manage that intersection between agriculture production on the one hand and protecting its tropical forest. so let me start with you. bag and food and how they think about that and people are hungry. how do you transcend that and get the food without raping and pillaging the land? >> lynn thank you and congratulations to you on the council. it's really a fantastic and the program this morning was really thought provoking so thank you for bringing this together and thanks for the question. i'm with the nature conservancy. i think you on the chin what we do. we are a global organization in agriculture is really risen to the top of argento for the last couple of years so it's one of what we call our global priorities that we are working on and that is across the night dates as well as othe

american vets, former marine and msnbc contributor goldie taylor and retired army captain wes moore. goldie, let me start with you and i want your reaction to what you heard hayden say. what's your reaction to that? >> i think he is right. we have to be ready to move at a moment's notice and i don't believe the standards ought to be relaxed. when i came out of boot camp, just after i came out of boot camp they instituted 54 weeks of -- 54 hours of continuous mental and physical challenge. to survive that you have to be in excellent physical shape. but in order to qualify for front-line infantry roles, that calls for something else. and i just don't believe there ought to be a difference in the standard. if a woman can meet those standards she ought to be able to serve, be recognized and paid for it. >> simple as that. if she can meet the standards she's good to go. >> i agree. what the policy is asking for is not set asides or any type of quotas. it is simply saying we should open and allow opportunities for women who choose to go in to this that they can have the opportunities to do so. it

yesterday. there were two -- captain kelly, gabby giffords's husband, and the captain of the bald moore county sheriff's department james johnson who spoke very powerfully articulately and eloquently for common sense gun control measures, and then the other side of the panel, there were three gun nuts on the panel. david coppel, a professor from denver, a woman gail trotter, and wayne lapierre from the nra. gail trotter was out of her mine. i mean, she said guns -- i got the exact quote here -- that guns have to -- guns keep women safe. guns keep women safe. guns make women safe is the exact quote. and every mother needs an ak-15 in the home to protect their kids. and of course wayne lapierre comes back and says the only answer is we have to make every school an armed camp. >> it's time to throw an immediate blanket of security around our children. about a third of our schools right now have armed security already, because it works, and that somebody is growing every day. >> bill: so the question that nobody asked wayne lapierre yesterday, and which i keep w

yes. but a lawsuit at a catholic hospital at tom as moore hospital. the obstetrician and staff should have performed an emergency c-section to save the twins. the man is asking the state supreme court to consider this case. colorado law says the hospital is not liable, but what does the church doctrine say? joining me now it bill donohue, president of the catholic league. a really tough one. doctrine of the church, but have you colorado law. which says that a fetus is not a human being. how do you argue that? >> well, look, the civil courts can do whatever they want. i understand what colorado law is, but the fact of the matter is, catholic church is driven by natural law. catholic church says natural law trumps the civil law. we know that life begins at concept. for the catholic church to say we'll hide under the rubric of civil law, because the lawyers say they are going to save us money, they are acting like har lots quite frankly. i hope the hospital gets stripped of its catholic status. the worst thing you can provide is scandal according to jesus to create confusion and doubt in

steven moore from the "wall street journal" sat down with john boehner, speaker of the house, who was shortly -- after he sat down -- before reelected. john boehner revealed essentially the president's mind-set. john boehner kept talking about, look, mr. president, we've got a spending problem in this country. and the president said we don't have a spending problem. we've got a problem with health care. health care is the big driver of all the big price tags in this country, he said. and john boehner obviously disagreed. >> a lot of people should agree actually with that. a lot of people say because of obamacare, this is probably not where the president was going with it, but because of obamacare health c and taxes wil go up. it's interesting that he would believe that would be the reason for the spending problem. a lot of people think that's going to be exacerbated with obamacare in full force. >>brian: he goes on to say in what i think is an exclusive interview, he repeated the message so often he said toward the end of the negotiations the president became irritated and said i'
